Science Construction, Making Observations in Poetry, and Lunch with Mrs. C Day!

It is clear to me that I did not take very many pictures this week.
Here are a few of the moments that made it to my phone:

We are reading through two different poems from Jack Prelutsky called "I'm Sorry!" and "I'm Much Too Tired to Play Tonight."
We were making jots on patterns we noticed and other interested things as we read.

The weather was perfect for lunch with Mrs. C day!

We enjoyed sitting outside and chatting with friends.

I can't wait for the next one. Hopefully all of the bees will be long gone by then!

My daughter would be making so much fun of me for my poor selfie pictures with the kids.
I will keep practicing!

Earthquake Structure Research, Writing Across Pages, Diversity Lesson, and Book Clubs!

Mrs. Fornek did a lesson with the class about inclusion for those that may speak another language.
We started off by discovering how many different languages we speak at home with family or loved ones.

Then, we did an activity where we had to create groups (without talking) based on a sticker that we put on our cheek. We had to learn how to communicate without talking.

We discovered that if someone does not know/understand a language that we need to
try different strategies to help them understand and more importantly that we need to include them in our activities.

In science, we read about different structures and systems that are used in earthquake-resistant building designs. We will use this information next week as we design and
construct our our earthquake-resistant building.

After we read, we worked with our partner to develop a "Top 5" ideas to share out.
This helps us to do more than just read the text. We are working on remembering and sharing what we read in a meaningful way!

In writing, we worked on writing our story across pages.
We began several rough drafts this week.
On Thursday and Friday, we learned how to create a character with
internal and external character traits.

We will be doing more with our character and our story next week!

Book Clubs are rocking!

At the end of the week, we worked on summarizing each chapter.
This strategy helps us to comprehend what we are reading by putting the text in our own words.
We are using the structure "Somebody Wanted But So Then" to help us.

Name Writing, Science, and Math Talks!

On Friday, we worked with our science group to observe/measure the amount of movement of corn kernels from different locations in relation to the focus of an earthquake.

We filled up our "Put Up Jar."
Each time we are caught doing something kind for others in class or around school, we get to add a poof ball to our jar. The kids are also catching on and giving out poof balls when someone is showing kindness to others. Way to go, Cacioppo Crew!

For our math talks, we are discovering that there are many different ways we can reach a number. In this activity, we are sharing our addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations with classmates!

On Friday, we began a "mission" to for place value.
We had to apply what we learned in the chapter and use it to solve different challenges!
We will continue this week.

In science, we created our own waves as we learned about the natural disaster tsunamis.

In LMC, we learned some new procedures and also checked out some books.

Our class likes to talk about our favorite things!
In this getting to know you activity, the kids rolled a die and answered the
different questions on the board.
We liked creating our own questions, too!

We are working on building our writing stamina each day.
The kids are learning to elaborate, as well as check for capitalization and punctuation along the way.

In science, we read about earthquake hazards and volcano hazards. The kids worked with a buddy to create a list for each hazard.

Energy, Special Someone Day, and Kindness Rocks!

Congratulations to our latest student-selected kindness and grit award recipients! We are so proud of you! In science, we are learning how...
