Opera, Student Council Assembly, and Plenty of Smiles!!!

We started a new tradition in Room 44.
For the first week, I selected one student to earn the Kindness Award.
On Friday, this student selected another student who demonstrates kindness in and out of the classroom.
I also select a different student to earn the Grit Award for hard work, pushing through challenges, and doing their best work.
The kids created a mini-speech and presented the award to a different classmate on Friday.
I'm so proud of the class for acknowledging the greatness in others.

The kids are really into sharing their books from home that are in different languages.
We learned about books in Romanian, Polish, and Hebrew.

Wednesday- the day we did it ALL.
Field Trip to the Opera
Fire Drill
Student Council Assembly

We had to stop for a class picture on Friday after viewing the baskets for PumpkinFest.
SMILE!

On Halloween morning, the Cacioppo Crew will be working on kindness rocks to spread around the Kipling campus. The kids will also bring home one rock so it can be placed around our community!

Thank you for your support in this project!

Our newest recipients of the Kindness and Grit Awards.

We started something new where we acknowledge that there are many correct ways to solve math problems. The kids are given a math equation and they use "their way" to solve the problem.
We like to see and learn new ways to think of things!

Buddies, IDR, and Word Study

Multilingualism- Do you have any books at home that are written in another language or your home language? We had some friends bring in books from home to show the class.
We had books brought in that were written in Ukrainian, Hebrew, and Romanian.
INCREDIBLE!

We visited Mrs. Johnson's room to play math games with our first grade buddy.
We love helping out our buddies!

Word Study- Today we did an "open sort" where we created categories for our words to go under.
We are learning that we can group words that have similar prefixes, suffixes, and base words. We can also sort based on similar meaning and syllables. When we look for the

IDR (Individualized Daily Reading) time!

We have four bins full of brand new books in our class.
This week we worked on picking a good fit book.

We worked on two comprehension strategies called questioning and self-monitoring.
As we read, we want to ask questions along the way. Sometimes our questions will be answered as we continue reading. Sometimes a question is not answered by continuing reading.
For self-monitoring, we pit stop reading and ask ourselves:
What did I just read?
Does it make sense?
We know that good readers do more than just read the words.
They need to be thinking about what they are reading!

Who doesn't like a new scratch and sniff bookmark?!

Picture day fun!

One of our classmates met the author for Wings of Fire...
